Mystery Trip Leader Caro, Revealed!

Laura Stokes Avatar

My “Images from Tierra del Fuego“ post was supposed to have a photo of our trip leader, Carolina Rovtar. But when the email version of the post went out, she was missing!

Possibly rural Argentinian internet, likely operator error.

At any rate, here is the missing photo:

Caro, our OAT trip leader

Caro is a mighty-mite. Her hobby is acrobatics, especially the aerial ring. She describes the pose below, on a boulder in Tierra del Fuego, as “very easy, you just have to have balance.”

“Very easy” !!

For our group photo in Ushuaia, she jumped onto the U and posed on her hands. No seat, no feet!

During the Covid pandemic, when tourism was shut down for two full years, Caro earned a Master’s in ceramics and started a pottery collective with friends.

When not leading tours, Caro harvests and filters glacial clay, then throws and fires her pottery. The awe-inspiring natural landforms, glacial colors, and ever-changing light and skies inspire abstract and functional pieces. The Buena Vista Pasta Bar in Calafate features her dishes.

Like 90% of Argentinians, Caro was born in Buenos Aires. She fell in love with Patagonia as a teen-ager and disappointed her parents—a civil engineer and accountant—by moving 1500 miles south to live in Calafate.

“Welcome to my home.”

Thanks to local development of tourism, the town has grown from 2,000 to 30,000 in her 28 years here. She has guided over 30 trips to Antarctica and tours of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego too numerous to count.

Caro glows with love and passion for her country, Argentina; for the land that makes her soul happy, Patagonia; and for all of the natural world.

You’ll def want to check out my future post on the Perito Moreno glacier, part of Caro’s back yard.

PS—I changed the email notification so you have to click on the blog link to see the post. I did this because elements can be lost in the email, such as some photos and any videos. Let me know what you think about the extra click. ❤️
